Ecology: Terrestrial herb growing in open grass lands as well as laterite plateau


This species is Endemic to peninsular India IUCN RED DATA BOOK STATUS: Near threatened 

Tuber: 1 or 2 ellipsoid or globular 2 x 0.9 cm

Leaves: 1 – 2 opposite lying flat on ground coriaceous 5 X 4cm broadly ovate to 
sub orbicular, acute, entire, deep green above & pale green below, 8 to 12 nerved 
often upper leaf is replaced by bract, it may be 2 -3 mm above lower leaf on peduncle
Scape: 9 – 10cm, long, erect, rigid, terete, longitudinally ribbed 

Inflorescence:  flowered raceme 

Flowers: white, faintly perfumed, pedicellate, bracteate. Pedicel 2- 3cm long, elongated in fruits upto 5cm

Bracts: 1x0.7cm ovate, acute, amplexicaul, 5-7 nerved 

Sepals: unequal, white, acute 
Dorsal sepal 10x5mm broadly ovate, concave, 3 nerved
Lateral sepal 7x5mm, obliquely ovate, tapering at the apex, faintly 7 nerved

Petals: white 2 partite, upper segment: 7x6mm, obliquely ovate triangular, acute entire, 3 nerved, Lower segment filiform acute 9 – 12cm

Labellum: 3 partite10x18mm, lateral segment filiform spreading 
Mid segment linear, acute, slightly dilated above middle

Spur: 15 -17mm, curved, white tinged with green towards sub globular apex, shoerter than or equql in length with ovary

Column: Greenish white short, anther cells diverging with 1 – 2mmlong curved apiculus at the top Anther tricuspidate at the tip.

Anther tube short 

 

Rostellum greenish in between anther cells 

 Pollinia: 2x1mm ovoid, caudicle 1-2mm Viscidium large orbicular 
Staminode white, glandular, elliptic on sides of anther cell
Stigmatic processes 2mm long parallel white clavate at the tip


Ovary: 2-3cm long ribbed green

Fruit: capsule 2.8x5cm strongly ribbed 


Flowering: June- July                  
Fruiting: September
