Derivation of name: Latin habena, reins referring to the long strap like division of petals & lip
Salient features: 

  • Terrestrial plants, rarely epiphytic herbs e.g., Habenaria crinifera Lindl.

  • Roots tuberous fleshy

  • Stem unbranched

  • Sepals usually free

  • Dorsal sepal forming hood with petals

  • Petals entire, two lobed or bifid

  • Labellum entire or three lobed, spurred at the base 

  • Side lobes sometimes divided, 

  • Spur long or short, slender or saccate, often inflated at the apex 

  • Column long or short

  • Anther erect or reclined loculi adjacent or separated by ‘U’ shaped connective

  • Anther canal long or short, divergent, almost always adnate to the side lobes of rostellum

  • Lateral appendages two, sometimes two lobed

  • Pollinia two, sectile, long or short caudicle, small naked viscidium

  • Stigmatic processes two, long or short usually free but sometimes joined in lower part of rostellum

Ecology: Mostly epiphytic orchid growing on trunks of trees like Terminalia billirica & Mangifera indica also found growing in shady places on humus rich soil in ever green forest

 

Tuber: 1 oblong about 2x1cm lateral roots above tuber develops into secondary tuber

Leaves 4to 5 clustered at the base of the stem 5x2cm oblong elliptic or oblanceolate somewhat tapering at the base 

Scape 5 -15cm cylindrical covered by bracts, green

Inflorescence Raceme, 4 to 5 flowered

Flower: 3 to 4cm across shortly pedicellate bracteate white

Bracts 2x0.5mm oblong lanceolate sub acuminate shorter than ovary 

Sepals: sub equal greenish white 3 nerved 
Dorsal sepal 8x8mm obovate oblong 
Lateral sepal 11 x5mm oblique-oblong 

​Petals 8 x2mm narrowly linear oblong acute 1 nerved

Labellum: 3 lobed clawed, claw 5mm&linear 
lateral lobe of labellum 7x6mm cuneate, praemorse, lower part prolonged into 7x11mm projection
mid lobe 2 lobulated with mucro in between 10x7mm cuneate in outline, lobules praemorse with inner part prolonged into an acumination 10mm long 

Spur about 3.5mm long Clavate, greenish-white, dark green at the apex, longer than pedicel with ovary  

Column 3x3mm, white. Anther cell somewhat long with fairly long tubes with 2 lobulated lateral appendages 

Pollinia Globular, 1.5-2x1mm, caudicle 6 to7mm Viscidium small 
stigma lobes projecting opaque to white, Clavate
ovary 2-5mm shortly pedicellate

Capsule 3-4 X 1cm spindle shaped, strongly ribbed

Fruiting: September - October
